Popeye wasn’t like the other cartoon stars of his day. He was a rough and ugly sailor, with anchors tattooed on his muscular forearms.He talked in a funny mumble, smoked a pipe, squinted at the world through one eye, and was given to solving problems with his fists. And yet, U.S. polls in the 1930s showed that Popeye was more popular than Mickey Mouse. He was even first in popularity with children, despite his love for that hated food—spinach.

Spinach was Popeye’s secret weapon. During moment of great danger, he would gig out a can of the leafy green vegetable and gulp it down to gain super strength. Audience watching Popeye cartoons would wait excitedly for the moment when the spinach music would begin. They knew that the spinach would soon appear, and that Popeye would defeat the bad guy and save the day.

Popeye’s example inspired so many people that, during the first half of the 1930s, spinach sales increased in the United States by more than 30%.Crystal City, a key spinach growing and canning town in Texas, showed its gratitude by erecting a statue of Popeye.

Another statue of Popeye overlooks the Mississipi River in Chester, Illinois. That’s where Popeye’s creator Elzie Crisler Segar was born and where he learned to draw. In the 1920s, Segar was creating a comic strip known as Thimble Theater, about the toothpick-skinny Olive Oyl and her boyfriend, Ham Gravy. In 1929, Popeye made his first appearance in Segar’s Thimble Theater. The ugly sailor proved so popular that he eventually became Olive’s boyfriend and the star of the comic strip.

Before long, Popeye was appearing in animated films made by the Fleischer studios in New York City. In many of his cartoons, Popeye had to compete for the affections of Olive Oyl with the giant, black-bearded Bluto. Bluto is much bigger –and meaner—than Popeye, and more than once he had Popeye on the ropes. But when Popeye pulled out the spinach, everybody knew it was over for Bluto. One episode was an exception: Popeye forces Bluto to eat the spinach. He want Bluto to beat him up so he’ll be sent to the hospital where nurse Olive oyl works.

Right to the Popeye character have changed hands several times through the years, and the quality had generally gotten worse. Sadly for fans, he isn’t so popular anymore. His comic strip appears in only a few newspapers. On TV, recent Popeye cartoons have been cheap and unimaginative. A live-action Popeye movie was made in 1980, with Robin Williams playing the starring role , but it didn’t go over well with critics, or audiences.

Luckly,though, you can still rent some of Popeye’s early cartoons at your local video store. Look for Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor, a classic color feature made in 1936 by the Fleischer studios.As you watch Popeye in action, you’ll find yourself irresistibly singing along:“I’m Popeye the Sailor Man/I’m Popeye the Sailor Man/I’m strong to the fin-ich’ cause I eats me spin-ach/ I’m Popeye the Sailor Man!”

As a child growing up I watched Popeye, as did a lot of youngsters. We enjoyed the classic battles between Popeye and Brutus. I was first attracted in it because it’s funny and the characters are vivid. Then as I grew older, I have deeper thoughts of it. Righteous, brave, hot-tempered, violent, I think they’re the Popeye’s impressions in my mind. And though he’s sometimes jealous of Bluto, he’s still the real hero in all fans’ mind.

I enjoy the old Popeye cartoons . It always made me laugh the way Bluto would try to win Olive Oyl away from Popeye and she would scream and yell for Popeye to save her. I loved the movie Robin Williams did and thought Shelley Duvall made an awesome Olive Oyl.
