During the 1920s, while Walt Disney was making his name on the west coast, other animation studios were working hard to complete. In New York City, Max and Dave Fleischer were trying to come up with a character to match Mickey Mouse’s popularity. Their answer to the mouse was Betty Boop.

The original animation for Betty Boop was done by Grim Natwick. Natwick remembers how Betty“started out as a little dog with long ears, but the rest of her was extremely feminine, and she did a rather swinging dance in the first picture which no dog could have done.”

Later the long ears became earrings, and there was no mistaking Betty for a dog anymore. She had large round eyes with long black lashes, a pouting mouth, tiny pointed feet, dark curly hair and a curvy figure. She danced, giggled, shook her short skirt and flirted. She had a distinctive, high-pitched voice. She was sexy but naïve. As her theme song put it,“ Made of pen and ink, she can win you with a wink.”

Betty was a cartoon imitation of the American“flappers”of the 1920s. These women were not content to fulfill their rolls as obedient housewives. They wanted to be more independent. They dressed daringly, and pushed for more sexual freedom.Max Fleischer’s son Richard has said of Betty:”she was on her own, she was not a homebody, as most women were at that time. Betty was out working, earning a living. She was a city girl.”

Audiences loved Betty, often demanding that theater managers show her cartoons several times in a row.In one typical role, Betty plays circus performer who rides horses bareback. The ringmaster of the circus try to seduce Betty.” Do you like your job?” he says, stroking her legs. Then he whispers something in her ear which causes her to slap him. Betty sings:” you can feed me bread and water/ Or a great big bale of hay/ But don’t take my Boop-Oop-A-Doop away.

In the 1930s,after the wild, wide-open 1920s,America found itself in a more conservative mood. Audiences that had loved Betty now began complaining about her attitude and shirt skirt. Religious groups organized to protest.

Under increasing preasure, Hollywood agreed to a new code of production. Indecent exposure was forbidden, as were suggestive gestures. Betty would have to begin behaving like a good girl. She began wearing more clothes. She spent a lot of time in the house ,with her grandfather, singing lines like :”Lots of floors to scrub , and windows to rub.” But wearing an apron and washing dishes, Betty just wasn’t Betty anymore. She has lost her charm. After 1939, she didn’t make any new cartoons.

Two decades later, the conservative mood would change. When women began demanding their independence and sexual freedom again, in the sixties and seventies, Betty made a comeback. Betty Boop was always ahead of her time. Seventy years ago, her cartoons handled issues of women’s right and sexual harassment, which are still issues today. These days , more people than ever are fans of sexy Betty. She’s still winning us with a wink.

 Recommending reason

The current image of Betty Boop is cute, fun, and just a little bit sexy. I remember first watching the Betty Boop cartoon occasionally but I didn’t have any impression about this cartoon. My real obsession started when I cut my hair a certain way quite a few years ago and my coworkers at the convenience store where I worked at the time said I looked like her. After that, I really got into Betty Boop, and she's still one of my favorite old-time cartoon characters now.
